This weekend, July 10-12, Orlando offers at least a dozen free events spread across seven neighborhoods, a welcome relief after a week dominated by grim international headlines about wildfires in Spain, earthquakes in Venezuela, and a rising death toll from Typhoon Gaemi in Southeast Asia.
For locals looking to escape the news cycle without spending a dime, the city’s parks, museums and cultural districts have lined up programming that runs from sunrise to late evening. The key takeaway: nearly everything happens outdoors or in air-conditioned public spaces, and none of it requires a ticket.
The weekend kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. with the third installment of the Downtown Summer Concert Series at Lake Eola Park. The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra performs a program of Broadway favorites and movie scores from the Walt Disney Amphitheater stage. Bring a blanket, but leave the coolers at home, glass containers and alcohol are prohibited. Free parking is available at the Central Boulevard garage, but expect it to fill by 5:30 p.m.
Saturday morning, the Mills 50 District hosts its first “Neighborhood Flea” of the summer, running 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the former Ace Hardware at 1125 N. Mills Ave. Organizers say more than 40 vendors will sell vintage clothing, vinyl records, and handmade ceramics. Entry is free; the food trucks, including Jus’ Rolls and The Cornish Pasty, will be selling lunch plates ranging from $8 to $14.
Over in Ivanhoe Village, the Orlando Public Library’s downtown branch at 101 E. Central Blvd. is hosting a free drop-in “Build Your Own Zine” workshop from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. All supplies, paper, markers, stencils, a binding stapler, are provided by the Orange County Library System. Last month’s workshop drew 87 participants, according to library spokesperson Rachel Ewing.
Sunday offers two recurring free-admission opportunities. The Mennello Museum of American Art, located at 900 E. Princeton St. in Loch Haven Park, waives its usual $5 entry fee on the second Sunday of each month. This Sunday, visitors can see the current exhibition “Florida Highwaymen: Legacy and Landscape,” featuring 32 oil paintings from the original 1960s-70s group of Black landscape artists. The museum is open 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Also on Sunday, the Audubon Park Community Market takes over the parking lot of 1908 N. Mills Ave. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The market accepts EBT/SNAP benefits for fresh produce and prepared foods, and the first 50 visitors who show a reusable shopping bag receive a free bundle of hydroponic lettuce from Winter Park Harvest. Organizers reported 2,400 attendees at the July 5 market.
For families, the “Free Family Fun Day” at the CityArts Factory at 29 S. Orange Ave. runs from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Kids can paint a small canvas, watch a glass-blowing demonstration by the Orlando Glass Studio, and take home a free art kit. The event is co-sponsored by the Downtown Arts District and the city’s Office of Community Affairs.
Sunset is at 8:25 p.m. this weekend, so the Philharmonic concert on Friday and any evening strolls through Lake Eola will have ample light until nearly 9 p.m. The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, with highs near 93°F. Free covered parking is available at the Thornton Park Central garage at 222 N. Eola Dr., two-hour free parking, then $2 per hour after that.
Lynx bus route 28 serves both the Mills 50 and Audubon Park markets, with a day pass costing $2.50. The SunRail runs on a weekend schedule Saturday only; the closest stations are Church Street for downtown events and AdventHealth for Loch Haven Park. No fares are collected on Orange County’s Lymmo free downtown circulator, which stops within two blocks of every Downtown venue listed.
All events listed here were confirmed as free and open to the public as of Thursday evening. Call ahead or check each venue’s social media for last-minute weather changes, and bring a reusable water bottle; the city has installed three new free water refill stations in Lake Eola Park since April.
